Ballyliffin Golf ClubKarl J. O'Doherty , Ballyliffin, Co. DonegalEstablished 1947 The Glashedy Links makes the most of a genuinely dramatic location. Designed by Pat Ruddy and Tom Craddock, it has been laid out on predominantly higher ground above and beyond The Old Links. The views from the course are stunning. Measuring over 7000 yards from the Championship tees with vast undulating greens, cavernous bunkers and fairways that twist and roll beneath towering dunes, the challenge presented by the Glashedy Links is almost as formidable as it is exhilarating. It was once the best kept secret in golf, but Ballyliffin has recently been described as 'the Ballybunion of the North'. Situated close to Malin Head on Donegal's Inishowen Peninsula, Ireland's most northerly links comprises 365 acres of spectacular duneland and is practically surrounded by rolling hills and mountains - the only other boundary is the Atlantic Ocean. Ballyliffin Golf Club has two 18 hole courses: the classic Old Links and the magnificent new Glashedy Links, which opened for play in August 1995.

Lough DergCo. DonegalLough Derg is a large, shallow lough of over 2,000 acres, 4 miles north of Pettigo. This is the lough with the famous island known as St Patrick's Purgatory, with its basilica and penitential exercises, where pilgrims flock every year from June to August. What is less well known is that it holds a stock of nice trout averaging just under a pound and some much better ones too-trout to 4lb have been reported. The fish are pink fleshed and their diet consists mainly of Gammarus-freshwater shrimp. Other forms of fish food and fly life are relatively scarce and consequently the trout are slow to come to the fly. Lough Derg fishes best in May . It has fair hatches of chironomids and sedges and evening fishing gives best results. One favourite area is along by the north east shore where the river flows out. Boats are available for hire from Mr P M Monaghan at the Quay. Private angling boats are not allowed without permission from the Prior. It is worth sounding a note of warning:this lough can blow up very rough and it has many rocky shoals just under the surface. Permission.

Irish Surfing AssocationMr. Roci Allen , Tigh Na Mara, Co. DonegalThe organisation of surfing in Ireland commenced in 1967 when a few enthusiasts from Dublin founded the Surf Club of Ireland. The Surf Club of Ireland has now become the Irish Surfing Association and the growth of the sport has been such that there are now nine clubs around the country with three more expected to join during 1996. The clubs elect an executive who forms the Irish Surfing Association who in turn co-ordinate the surfing activities within the thirty two counties of the island of Ireland. There are over 800 members in nine clubs which represent approximately half of the surfing population of Ireland. Bundoran, Rossnowlagh and Rosbeg, Co. Donegal are some of the best known beaches in Ireland. Ireland is one of the most consistent surf destinations in Europe. The best months are undoubtedly April/May and September/October. Outside these periods, you have either cold winter weather, with huge, often uncontrollable swells, or long flat periods during the warm summer months. The weather is extremely changeable and rainfall is heavy all year round. Air temperatures in July/August can reach the mid-seventies, with water temperatures in the mid-sixties. During the winter, however the water temperature can drop below forty degrees, with air temperatures in January and February between thirty and forty degrees.
