An Grianan TheatrePatricia McBride , Port Road, Co. DonegalThe first season includes the best of local, national and international performances, including dance, drama, music, comedy, and traditional arts. To celebrate the opeining there will be a spectular Gala show, Trasnú, commissioned especially for the event. Trasnú's theme of cross-cultures weaves around the many talents of Altan, Riverdance's principal dancer, Breándan de Gaillí, Cathal O'Searcaigh, Aoife Ní Fhearraigh, Mairead Ní Mhaonaigh, Mairead agus Triona Ní Dhomhnaill, and Donal Lunny. The theatre is also producing Brian Friel's Translations, a play which speaks most eloquently of Donegal's experience in the last century. Directed by Frank Laverty and featuring some of Donegal's most popular actors, the play opens in An Grianán before going on a five week national tour of the major theatre venues. The threatre is also presenting shows by other great Irish writers - Town Hall Productions brings Wilde's 'The Importance of Being Earnest' and The Royal National Theatre brings Bernard Shaw's 'Widower's Houses' which will be directed by the leading Irish actress Fiona Shaw. Also showing will be Kabosh, the vibrant young Belfast company performing R&J, their all male version of Romeo & Juliet. Opening week at the theatre (16th October) features many events, including Donegal's first major dance festival. They have Dance Theatre of Ireland's stunning multi-media show 'Soul Survivor', Cois Ceim's gorgeous 'Dish of the Day' and Ballet Gwent's beautiful interpretation of Twelfth Night. There will also be performances from the National Chamber Choir, Miceal O'Rourke, and the RTE Concert Orchestra. The family show for Christmas will be Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, a wonderful musical adaptation by Paul Boyd of Lewis Carroll's favourite tale.
